Gemstone guide · Rahu & Ketu
Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes, the “shadow planets” of Vedic astrology. Gomed (hessonite garnet) is the gemstone of Rahu, and cat's eye (Lehsuniya) is the gemstone of Ketu.
Both are considered powerful, so astrologers usually recommend them only after a chart reading.
Gomed (hessonite) for Rahu
- What it is: a honey- to cinnamon-coloured variety of grossular garnet
- Traditionally worn for: balancing Rahu's restless, confusing influence; ambition and clarity; often during Rahu Mahadasha
- How to wear: Saturday, middle finger, in silver or Panchdhatu, chanting “Om Raam Rahave Namah” 108 times
- Care: about 7–7.5 Mohs; clean with mild soap and water
Cat's eye (Lehsuniya) for Ketu
- What it is: a stone showing chatoyancy, a single band of light that moves across the surface like a cat's eye; in Vedic astrology usually chrysoberyl or quartz cat's eye
- Traditionally worn for: protection from sudden losses and hidden enemies, intuition and spiritual growth; often during Ketu Mahadasha
- How to wear: the mantra is “Om Kem Ketave Namah”, 108 times; the day and finger vary by tradition, so follow your astrologer
- Care: clean with mild soap and water

Rahu and Ketu are considered unpredictable, so many people try the stone for a short period first and stop if anything feels unfavourable. These stones are also traditionally not combined with ruby or pearl.
