Gemstone guide · Jupiter
Pukhraj (yellow sapphire, Pushparag) is the gemstone of Jupiter (Guru), the planet of wisdom, wealth, children, marriage and dharma.
It is one of the most widely worn astrological gemstones in India.
Who traditionally wears Pukhraj?
- Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meen) Moon signs or ascendants
- Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio ascendants in many charts
- People seeking support in education, teaching, finance or marriage, where Jupiter is favourable
Pukhraj is not suitable for every chart, so consult an astrologer first.
How much should it weigh?
A common guideline is about 1 ratti per 10 kg of body weight, so most adults choose 4–7 carats. Convert with our carat to ratti guide.

Gold is the classic choice for Jupiter; Panchdhatu is a popular, more affordable traditional alternative. Choose an open-back setting.
The wearing ritual
- Day: Thursday morning, ideally during Shukla Paksha (waxing moon)
- Purify: rinse in raw milk and Ganga jal
- Mantra: chant “Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah” 108 times
- Finger: index finger of your working hand
Stones to avoid combining
Tradition considers Jupiter unfriendly with Venus and Mercury, so Pukhraj is usually not combined with diamond or emerald. Ask your astrologer.
Origin and budget
Ceylon (Sri Lankan) Pukhraj is the most sought after; Thailand-origin stones are the affordable choice. Read our origin guide. Citrine (Sunela) is the popular substitute; see the substitutes guide.
