Gemstone guide · Mercury
Emerald (Panna) is the gemstone of Mercury (Budh), which governs intellect, speech, commerce and learning.
It is a traditional Rashi Ratan for Gemini (Mithun) and Virgo (Kanya).
Zambian vs Brazilian emerald
- Zambian: usually a deeper green with a slightly bluish tone; priced higher
- Brazilian: often a lighter or more yellowish green; the more affordable choice
Colour matters more than origin: look for an even, lively green that is neither too dark nor too pale.
Inclusions (jardin) are normal
Almost all natural emeralds contain inclusions, called jardin (“garden”). A completely clean, very cheap emerald should raise questions. Many emeralds are also oiled to improve clarity, a long-standing trade practice that labs may note.
