Gemstone guide · Saturn
Neelam (blue sapphire) is the gemstone of Saturn (Shani) and is considered the fastest-acting and most intense of the Navratna.
That is why astrologers treat it with more caution than any other stone.
Who traditionally wears Neelam?
- Capricorn (Makar) and Aquarius (Kumbh) Moon signs or ascendants
- Taurus and Libra ascendants, for whom Saturn is often favourable
- People in Shani Sade Sati or Dhaiya, only if a chart reading supports it
Always consult an astrologer before wearing Neelam.
How much should it weigh?
Many astrologers suggest at least 2–3 carats, often guided by about 1 ratti per 10–12 kg of body weight. Use our carat to ratti guide to convert.

Neelam is traditionally set in silver, Panchdhatu, gold or platinum, with an open back so the stone can touch the skin.
The wearing ritual
- Day: Saturday, in the evening
- Purify: rinse the ring in raw milk and Ganga jal
- Mantra: chant “Om Sham Shanaishcharaye Namah” 108 times
- Finger: middle finger, traditionally of the right hand for men and left for women (many people use the working hand)
The trial tradition
Because Neelam is believed to act quickly, many people first keep the stone with them, for example under the pillow or tied to the arm, for about three days and note how they feel and what happens. If anything feels unfavourable, they stop. This is a traditional practice rather than a rule.
Stones to avoid combining with Neelam
Tradition considers Saturn unfriendly with the Sun, Moon and Mars, so Neelam is usually not combined with ruby, pearl or red coral. Ask your astrologer.
Affordable alternative
Amethyst (Jamunia) is the popular, gentler substitute for Neelam. See amethyst.
