Gemstone guide · Moon
Pearl (Moti) is the gemstone of the Moon (Chandra), which governs the mind, emotions and inner peace.
It is the traditional Rashi Ratan for Cancer (Kark) and is often suggested for anger, restlessness or a weak Moon in the chart.
South Sea vs freshwater pearls
| South Sea pearl | Freshwater pearl | |
|---|---|---|
| Grown in | Saltwater oysters in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean regions | Freshwater mussels in lakes and rivers |
| Size and lustre | Larger, with a deep satin lustre | Smaller, softer lustre |
| Price | Higher | Affordable |
What to look for
- Lustre: a bright, even glow is the most important quality
- Surface: fewer blemishes are better (graded as AAA, AA and so on)
- Shape: round and near-round are traditional for astrology
- Certificate confirming it is a pearl, not glass or plastic

- Day: Monday morning, ideally during Shukla Paksha
- Metal: silver is traditional
- Finger: little finger of the right hand (or as a pendant)
- Mantra: “Om Chandraya Namah”, 108 times, after dipping in raw milk
Caring for pearls
Pearls are organic and soft (about 2.5–4.5 Mohs). Put them on after perfume and cosmetics, remove them for cooking, swimming and gardening, and store them away from harder jewellery.
Substitute
Moonstone is a popular gentler alternative for the Moon.
