Astrology guide
In Vedic astrology, each zodiac sign (Rashi) is ruled by a planet, and the gemstone of that planet is the sign's traditional Rashi Ratan.
Most astrologers use your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi), not your Western Sun sign. The table below is a general guide; your astrologer may recommend a different stone based on your full birth chart.

Western astrology uses the Sun sign (by birth date), while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and usually the Moon sign, so your Vedic Rashi is often one sign earlier than your Western sign. If you are unsure, an astrologer can calculate it from your date, time and place of birth; our Astro Check consultation can help.
Rashi Ratan vs Lagna (ascendant) stone
Many astrologers prefer to choose a stone based on the ascendant (Lagna) and the strength of planets in your chart rather than the Moon sign alone. Strong stones such as Neelam are usually recommended only after a chart reading.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear two gemstones together?
Some combinations are considered unfriendly in tradition (for example ruby with blue sapphire). Ask your astrologer before combining stones.
Are substitutes effective?
Substitute stones (uparatna) are traditionally considered gentler and are popular when the primary stone is out of budget. See our guide to substitute gemstones.
