Astrology guide
Navratna means “nine gems”: one gemstone for each of the nine Navagraha (planets) of Vedic astrology.
Each stone is traditionally worn to strengthen a planet that is favourable but weak in your birth chart.
The nine planets and their gemstones
| Planet | Gemstone (Hindi) | Traditionally linked with | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | Ruby (Manik) | Confidence, authority, leadership | Sunday |
| Moon (Chandra) | Pearl (Moti) | Mind, emotions, calm | Monday |
| Mars (Mangal) | Red coral (Moonga) | Courage, energy, property | Tuesday |
| Mercury (Budh) | Emerald (Panna) | Intellect, speech, business | Wednesday |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) | Wisdom, wealth, marriage | Thursday |
| Venus (Shukra) | Diamond (Heera) | Love, beauty, comfort | Friday |
| Saturn (Shani) | Blue sapphire (Neelam) | Discipline, hard work, justice | Saturday |
| Rahu | Hessonite (Gomed) | Ambition, clarity amid confusion | Saturday |
| Ketu | Cat's eye (Lehsuniya) | Intuition, spirituality, protection | varies by tradition |
The Navratna arrangement
In a traditional Navratna ring or pendant, ruby sits at the centre, surrounded by the other eight stones in a set order. Because it combines all nine planets, many people wear Navratna jewellery as a general auspicious piece rather than for a single planet.
Primary stones and substitutes
Each planet also has gentler, more affordable substitute stones (uparatna), such as citrine for Pukhraj, amethyst for Neelam, green onyx or peridot for Panna, and opal or zircon for diamond. See our substitute gemstones guide.
Do I need a chart reading first?
For the stronger stones, especially Neelam, Gomed and cat's eye, astrologers almost always recommend a chart consultation first. Pearl, Pukhraj, coral and ruby are also usually chosen based on your chart. Irani Firoza is a common exception that anyone can wear.
